Is it time for a new roof? As roofs are the most important part of our home's weatherproofing, a leaking roof can cause incalculable damage in a very short period of time. To prevent this from happening to you, we here at B. F. Carr and Son have compiled a list of things to look for. If you notice any of the following damage on your roof please feel free to have us inspect your roof and if necessary provide a free estimate on all repairs needed. |
Broken Shingles Damage can be caused by extreme wind conditions or snow removal. Since shingles are designed to shed water, broken, torn or missing tabs become entry points for water. |
Curling Shingles The upward curling of shingle tabs makes them highly susceptible to wind and ice damage. This is a problem on older roofs where moisture build-up in the attic affects the underside of the shingle. |
Buckling Shingles Buckling is a visible distortion or waviness in the horizontal lines of the shingles, and usually runs in a straight line up the slope. Shingle tabs become exposed to wind and can be torn off. Very often, the problem is warping in the roof deck caused by poor attic ventilation. |
Clawing Shingles Clawing refers to curling under the shingle tab's bottom edge and is part of the normal aging process of shingles. The bulge created makes the shingle very susceptible to substantial damage from wind, hail and ice. |
So, you've decided it's time for a new roof. 1. Ice and Water Shield is applied to protect against damage caused by ice dams forming in the winter months. 2. Felt paper is installed as a secondary underlayment to protect against blow under. 3. A minimum of a 25 year shingle is installed. Shingles are available in many different colors and styles. 4. Ridge vent will help to properly ventilate the attic space to let the extreme heat escape from the home. 5. Ridge caps are installed over the ridge vent to water tight the peak of the roof. |
